Queanbeyan sits just over the NSW border from Canberra, with its own industrial precincts, growing southern estates like Googong and Jerrabomberra, and the Kings Highway heading east to the coast. Auto electrical work covers commuters, tradies, trucks and plenty of towing.

Suburbs in Queanbeyan

Queanbeyan is the seat of the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council and a commuter town for many people who work in Canberra. The old town centre sits on the Queanbeyan River around Monaro and Crawford Streets. Light manufacturing and industry are centred on Yass Road in Queanbeyan East and on Gilmore Road. To the south, newer estates at Jerrabomberra, Karabar and Googong are full of young families. Trucks, tradies' utes and holiday traffic for the coast all pass through, so the work is a mix of country-town and suburban.

Common auto electrical jobs in Queanbeyan

These jobs come up again and again in and around Queanbeyan.

Industrial precinct vehicles

The industrial areas on Yass Road and Gilmore Road are home to manufacturers, building suppliers, workshops and transport operators. Their trucks and utes need reliable lighting, charging and starting, and many run 24V systems. Common faults include corroded trailer plugs, failed clearance lights, chafed wiring and tired batteries after a cold night in the yard. For trailer issues, see why aren't my trailer lights working.

Towing to the coast

The Kings Highway runs east from Queanbeyan past Bungendore, through Braidwood and down the Clyde Mountain to Batemans Bay, and in summer it's full of caravans and boat trailers. Brake controllers, trailer plugs and van batteries all get a workout on that climb and descent. A boat trailer dipped in salt water needs its lights and plug checked after every trip. Our guide how to wire a 7-pin trailer plug covers the basics.

After a flood

The Queanbeyan River has flooded many times, including in December 2010, when it peaked at 8.4 metres and forced evacuations, and again in 2016. Water in connectors, modules and wiring can cause faults that appear weeks later. If a car has been in floodwater, don't keep trying to start it. Have it inspected, and look out for a burning smell or smoke from car wiring, which needs immediate attention.
