North of Lake Burley Griffin, inner-north apartments and old shopping centres sit along the light rail line, with the Mitchell industrial estate further up Flemington Road. The work runs from flat batteries in basement car parks to trade vans and workshop fit-outs.

Suburbs in North Canberra

North Canberra changes as you head up Northbourne Avenue. Braddon and the streets around Lonsdale Street were Canberra's first light-industrial area and later its car trade strip. Now they are mostly apartments, cafés and short trips. Dickson mixes a busy group centre, older houses and new apartment blocks around the light rail stop. Further north along Flemington Road, Mitchell is a working estate of warehouses, trade suppliers and the light rail depot. So a job in Braddon is often a basement flat battery, while one in Mitchell is more likely a ute that needs a second battery.

Common auto electrical jobs in North Canberra

These are the jobs that come up most often between Civic and the Mitchell estate.

Short trips and frosty starts

Plenty of inner-north drivers use the light rail or ride to work, so the car might only do a short supermarket run a couple of times a week. That's hard on a battery, and the problem shows up on the first proper frost of the year, when a weak battery has to turn over a cold engine. Have the battery tested in autumn, before the cold mornings arrive. Our guide on why a car battery keeps going flat covers the usual causes.

Cameras for tight parking

Narrow apartment car parks, kerbside parking around the group centres and busy light rail crossings all make a reversing camera and a dashcam worth having. Hardwired dashcams with parking mode need care, because a camera that keeps recording overnight can flatten the battery of a car that only does short trips. A low-voltage cut-off and a properly fused supply avoid that. Route the cable neatly along the headlining and pillar trims, clear of any curtain airbags.

Trade vehicles out of Mitchell

Mitchell is full of builders, sparkies, plumbers and suppliers whose utes and vans carry tool chargers, fridges and lights. Run all of that from the starting battery and it won't be long before a ute fails to start on a building site in the new northern suburbs. A second battery with a DC-DC charger keeps the work load separate. See DC-DC charger or isolator to work out which suits your vehicle.
