Gungahlin is Canberra's northern growth district, full of young families, new estates and a town centre at the end of the light rail line. Auto electrical work here is mostly family SUVs, towing set-ups and the 12V systems in newer cars.

Suburbs in Gungahlin

Gungahlin has grown fast over the past two decades, and most of its suburbs are newer than the cars parked in them. The town centre around Hibberson Street has dense apartment living, while the surrounding estates are full of family homes with a ute, an SUV and often a trailer or camper in the driveway. Commuters head south on Gungahlin Drive and Flemington Road, or north on the Federal and Barton Highways towards Sydney and Yass. The work is less about old cars and more about modern electrics and towing.

Common auto electrical jobs in Gungahlin

These are the jobs that come up most in Canberra's newest district.

Towbar wiring on new cars

Lots of Gungahlin families buy a new SUV and then want to tow a camper or caravan. Modern cars often need a vehicle-specific towbar wiring harness, because tapping into the tail light wiring can upset the car's lighting monitoring and cause warning lights. A proper harness protects the car's electrics and makes trailer lights reliable. Our guide do I need a towbar wiring harness explains the options.

Stop-start and AGM batteries

Many newer cars in Gungahlin have engine stop-start systems, which need an AGM or EFB battery rather than a standard flooded one. Fit the wrong type and stop-start may stop working or the battery will die early. Some cars also need the new battery registered with the car's computer. Our guide car battery types explained helps you choose the right one.

Cameras for new estates

New estates mean narrow streets, cars parked on both sides and lots of young children on bikes. Reversing cameras and parking sensors are popular additions on older second cars, and dashcams are common for the Gungahlin Drive commute. A neat, fused install with cables hidden behind the trims lasts much longer than a cable dangling from the lighter socket, and it won't get pulled loose by kids in the back.
