Suburbs in Belconnen

Belconnen has 27 suburbs and more people than any other ACT district. The town centre on the shore of Lake Ginninderra is filling up with apartments, while Bruce holds the University of Canberra, the AIS, Canberra Stadium and a busy hospital. Older suburbs like Aranda and Macquarie have long-owned family cars, and the newer estates on the western edge are full of young families with SUVs and trailers. There's almost no heavy industry, so the work is mostly household cars, commuter vehicles and the vans of local tradies.

Common auto electrical jobs in Belconnen

Here's what keeps auto electricians busy across Belconnen.

Frost and flat batteries

Belconnen's open suburbs get the full force of Canberra's frosts, and a lot of cars here are parked in driveways rather than garages. A battery that coped through summer often fails on the first sub-zero morning. If your car cranks slowly when it's cold but starts fine in the afternoon, the battery is telling you something. Our guide how to test a car battery covers simple checks.

Trailers and caravans

Plenty of Belconnen families tow trailers to the tip or caravans to the coast. Trailer lights that work one weekend and fail the next usually come down to a corroded plug or a poor earth. Check the plug before every trip, and keep the trailer end clean and dry when it's parked. Our guide why aren't my trailer lights working walks through the usual faults.

Cameras for busy car parks

The town centre, university and stadium car parks are big and busy, and minor bumps are common. Dashcams and reversing cameras are popular fitments, especially for newer drivers. Hardwiring a dashcam looks neater than a cigarette lighter plug and frees up the socket, but it needs a fused supply and care around airbags in the pillars. A camera that records while parked needs a low-voltage cut-off to protect the battery.
