Common auto electrical jobs in Kingston

Kingston is one of Canberra's oldest suburbs, now mostly apartments around the Kingston shops and the Foreshore. Many cars here are newer, well kept and lightly used.

Lightly used cars

With the Kingston shops, the Foreshore and the Parliamentary Triangle all close, plenty of residents only drive once or twice a week. Modern cars keep drawing a little power while parked, and short trips don't put it back. The result is a car that won't start after a quiet fortnight, especially in winter. Our guide how to test a car battery shows how to check yours at home.

Hybrids and EVs

Hybrids and electric cars are a common sight in Kingston's car parks. Most electrical calls for them are about the 12V system, not the big battery. A weak 12V battery can stop the car from powering up, cause strange warning messages or lock you out. Replacing it is routine work, though some cars need a particular battery type or a reset afterwards. The high-voltage system is for licensed professionals only.

Keyless entry and immobiliser faults

A car that won't unlock or won't start, with a key light flashing on the dash, often has a flat key fob battery or a weak car battery behind it. In some apartment car parks, radio interference from gates and other electronics can make it worse. Try the spare key and a new fob battery before assuming the worst. If that doesn't fix it, a proper diagnosis will show whether it's the immobiliser, the receiver or the key.

Warning lights after a flat battery

When a modern car's battery goes completely flat, it can throw a handful of warning lights once it's jumped or recharged. Sometimes they clear after a drive. Sometimes a module needs resetting or a window needs its auto function relearned. Reading the codes tells you which is which. Our guide on what to do when a dashboard warning light comes on explains which lights need attention straight away.

Kingston auto electrical questions

Why does my hybrid's 12V battery go flat when the car is barely used?

Hybrids keep their computers ready while parked, and the 12V battery is often small. Leave the car for a couple of weeks and the battery may be too low to power it up. Unlike a petrol car, the hybrid system can't charge the 12V battery until the car is switched on and in ready mode. Regular drives help.

Can I jump start a hybrid or EV?

Many can be jump started at the 12V terminals, but the location and method vary. Some have a dedicated jump point under the bonnet while the battery sits in the boot. Check the owner's manual before connecting anything. Never connect leads to any orange high-voltage cables or components, which are for licensed professionals only.

Local tip for Kingston

The Old Bus Depot Markets fill the Foreshore area on Sundays, and parking around the lake can be tight. If your car has been sitting for a while, start it the day before you plan to drive out. Finding out your battery is flat is much less stressful in your own car space than in a crowded street.
