Common auto electrical jobs in Dickson

Dickson has one of the inner north's busiest group centres, including a cluster of automotive repairers, and a population that runs from long-time residents to students and young families. That means a wide spread of cars and faults.

Older family cars

Many of Dickson's original houses have had the same owners for decades, and so have some of the cars in their driveways. Older cars bring their own electrical faults: worn starter motors, tired alternators, brittle wiring and corroded earth points. A slow crank on a cold Canberra morning is often the first warning. Our guide is it my starter motor or my battery helps you narrow it down.

Windows and central locking

Electric windows and door locks wear out with use, and older cars around Dickson are at the age where they start to fail. Sometimes it's a switch, sometimes a regulator or motor, and sometimes a wire that has snapped inside the rubber boot between the door and the body. Cold weather makes worn motors slower still. See electric window stopped working for checks you can do yourself first.

Air con in a Canberra summer

Canberra summers can be very hot, and the ACT's record of 44.0°C was set at Canberra Airport in January 2020. Air conditioning that blows warm in traffic on Northbourne Avenue is often an electrical fault: a condenser fan that has stopped, a failed relay or a blown fuse. Those are worth checking before assuming the system needs gas. Any refrigerant work needs a licensed technician.

Headlights for dark winter evenings

In June and July it's dark before 5:30 pm in Canberra, so the drive home is often at night. Dim or yellowed headlights make it harder to spot cyclists, pedestrians at the light rail crossings and kangaroos on the edges of the inner north. Replace halogen globes in pairs, and clean or restore cloudy lenses. Our guide how do I change my headlight globe shows how on most cars.

Dickson auto electrical questions

Is it worth repairing the electrics on an older car?

Often it is. Many faults on older cars come down to one worn part or a corroded connection, and those repairs are usually far cheaper than replacing the car. Ask for a diagnosis and a quote before the work starts. If the fix involves an expensive module on a low-value car, that's when it's worth weighing up.

My air con works on the highway but not in traffic. Why?

At speed, air rushing through the condenser does the cooling. In slow traffic, an electric fan has to take over. If the air con only goes warm when you're crawling or stopped, the condenser fan, its relay or its fuse is a likely cause. These are electrical checks an auto electrician can do before anyone touches the refrigerant.

Local tip for Dickson

Parking around the Dickson shops can be hard to find on weekends, and cars left in the open car parks bake in summer and frost over in winter. If your battery is more than three years old, have it tested in April or May. It's a quick check, and it's far better than finding out on a minus-five morning in July.
